prayers for Margaret … a jersey girl update

Jeanne here …

A few days ago, I noticed a post on Facebook from our Jersey Girl Donna that her daughter Margaret was in surgery and needed prayers…

Margaret is 11.

I don’t know Margaret.

I have seen photos on Donna’s Facebook page.

She is beautiful.

And energetic.

And, clearly, she is the heart of her mother.

She’s also the reason I know Donna, because Margaret plays field hockey with my friend Rachael’s daughter.  And it was Rachael who introduced me to Jersey Girl Donations and Donna.

So … as much as I’d like to update you all on the progress of Jersey Girl Donations (your generosity still amazes me … just today, a donation of toys, Christmas decorations, cleaning supplies, and so much more, worth more than $200!, was sent to New Jersey.  THANK YOU!), I’d like to take a moment to ask you all to pray for Margaret.

It turns out, that this beautiful, engaging, warm-hearted girl has a condition that is serious, but operable. (Her mother has asked that we not focus on the specifics, but keep our hearts and minds on the best outcome.)

Please … in the moments when you find yourself praying … please add Margaret to those prayers.  Ask that God guide the hands of the surgeons who will operate on her … that he warm the hearts of the nurses who care for her … and that he strengthen her family and friends, that they have the courage to stand strong through her recovery.

A brief update …

Last weekend, Donna “stayed local” because more than 1,000 people are living in the Hopatcong High School because they are still without power or because of damage to their homes and property.  She and her family delivered more than a few items (clothes, food, water and the like) because that’s where they were needed.  She’s working with a Catholic Church in Point Pleasant and gearing up for another weekend of heartbreaking awesomeness.

Since we opened the HURRICANE RELEIF STORE at O’Mamas … your open hearts and generosity have sent:

  • baby food
  • toothpaste
  • toothbrushes
  • blankets
  • trash bags
  • bath towels
  • and crayons

to the folks who otherwise would have none!

This week’s “needs list” includes:

  • School Supplies
  • Cleaning Supplies
  • Gloves – work and rubber
  • New Socks and Underwear
  • Toys and Decorations for Christmas and Hanukah!

All gifts purchased through the O’MAMAS HURRICANE RELIEF STORE are tax deductible and any profits we receive will be returned to the relief effort!

To everyone who is contributing (through our store, or some other organization), your generous response has been awesome.  THANK YOU!

PS – Don’t forget to register for this week’s GIVEAWAY!

jersey girl to the rescue!

Jeanne here …

I don’t know if you know this, but I was born and raised in New Jersey. Hackettstown. Which is sort of North Jersey. In Warren County. On Route 46.

And I still have a lot of friends and family there.

My cousins.

My aunts and uncles.

My best girls from high school.

So many of them are still in the area.

So this has been a weird week for me. Hearing and seeing the devastation brought by Sandy … and now this storm that started yesterday, wreaking it’s own kind of havoc and slowing down the recovery efforts.

So many still don’t have power.

The gas lines are crazy long.

And I personally know at least two people who lost everything in the storm and/or the aftermath. Their homes. Their cars. They survived with the clothes on their backs. And they feel blessed. They feel blessed that their lives were spared. They feel blessed that their families are with them. And they feel blessed by the friends who have opened their doors and hearts to them.

It’s really amazing.

So while I’ve been going on day by day just living my life without nary a disruption … these folks have faced the worst and continue to smile and hope and acknowledge the goodness in their disrupted lives.

Which brings me to Donna Murphy Walling.

Donna is a mom who lives in Hackettstown.

I’ve never met her personally.

But her kids play field hockey and cheer with the daughter of one my best friends.

She lives across the street from my childhood home.

She’s friends with Michele, who is my friend Pam’s sister-in-law.

Etc. etc. etc.

We’re connected in more ways that I can recount.

And she apparently has a gorgeous and generous heart.

Because Donna has taken it upon herself to spend her days (while her kids are in school) driving donations to disrupted areas and distributing them to people in need. Personally. She has collected clothes, personal hygiene supplies, crayons and paper, and driven to the shore (and to Staten Island this weekend) to make sure that it winds up in the hands of people that need it.

And after just a few days, it turned into something pretty significant. She’s building a foundation. Jersey Girl Donations.

And while she’s not taking cash donations at this time, she IS accepting stuff… and gift cards… and

And we’d like to help her.

So Abby and I have created a special division of our STORE.

It’s stocked with supplies that are being requested by the actual victims, and will be updated as new requests come in.

And any profits we receive from the HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF STORE will be donated back to Jersey Girl Donations.

Gifts will be tax deductible. So long as you include your information on the donation, Donna will send you a letter with their tax ID number for your taxes.

Donations should be sent to:

Jersey Girl Donations

470 Schooley’s Mountain Road

Hackettstown, NJ 07840

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to check out what people really need, and find space in your heart and pocketbook to help out. She’s doing an amazing thing. And I feel honored that she’s letting us be a part of her efforts.

PLEASE NOTE: Donna has her own STORE on Avon and profits from items purchased through her store also go back into relief efforts.
