The day after my high school graduation, my three best girlfriends and I headed to Fort Lauderdale.  Our version of a great time was henna tattoos, and opting for baby oil instead of sunscreen.  We rubbed ourselves down with that stuff, and wore our sunburn proudly.

Obviously things have changed a lot for me.  While I’d do just about anything for a trip to the beach with girlfriends, I now know that worshipping the sun isn’t necessarily the best thing.

In all my reading and trying to understand natural health, I’ve learned that the sun (in reasonable amounts) is my friend. Most days we don’t use sunscreen, but when we are out for several hours and can’t catch a break or a bit of shade we apply a safe, non-toxic sunscreen.

This time last year we told you about the dangers of most standard sunscreens.  Nothing’s changed, so you can imagine our delight when Garden Goddess approached us to sample their products and give a bundle to you guys.

Garden Goddess was founded by a mom in 2004 for her daughter who was allergic to chemicals in traditional sunscreens and bath products.  They’ve sent over their Kids Continuous Sports Spray, 3.4 oz Sunny Face and 3.4 oz Sunny Body (a $54 value)  for one lucky reader, just in time for warm weather!

we’re giving thanks for this giveaway

A few months ago we introduced you to these ladies …

Pic for O'Mama's

Rebekah and Kaelin head up our local chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Do you know about WAPF? Amazing group, promoting real food diets, traditional cooking methods and conscious eating. And Kaelin and Rebekah are two pretty remarkable real food advocates …under their inspired leadership, we’ve seen the local chapter meetings nearly double in size!! Which just means more people are caring about the food we eat. More people caring about their food means more people are living consciously. And more people living consciously means the world we live in has no choice but to get better. Yay Kaelin and Rebekah for leading the charge!

To say that we were excited when they emailed us offering to sponsor a book bundle giveaway is kind of an understatement.

And then they told us the books they wanted to give away and we were so excited!!!!

You’ll see for yourselves how incredible these books are … Jeanne uses the recipes in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon as a foundation for so much of her cooking.  Reading Kaayla Daniel’s Soy book will change the way you look at this so-called “health food.”  And it might just be because we’re geeky real food foodies, but the Milk book by Ron Schmid is just fascinating.

So we’re pretty thankful this week (which is just a lucky coincidence that it’s the week of Thanksgiving) to have such a great giveaway, from these incredible sponsors.

Do yourself (or someone you love) the favor of registering to win … seriously 🙂

Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon
A full-spectrum nutritional cookbook with a startling message animal fats and cholesterol are vital factors in the human diet, necessary for reproduction and normal growth, proper function of the brain and nervous system, protection from disease and optimum energy levels. Includes information on how to prepare grains, health benefits of bone broths and enzyme-rich lacto-fermented foods.

The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food, Kaayla Daniel, PHD
A groundbreaking expose that tells the truth about soy that scientists know but that the soy industry has tried to suppress. Soy is not a health food, does not prevent disease and has not even been proven safe. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive problems, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, even heart disease and cancer.

The Untold Story of Milk, Ron Schmid
The role of raw milk in the rise of civilization, the milk problem that led to compulsory pasteurization, the politics of the dairy industry. Revised and updated with the latest scientific studies documenting the safety and health benefits of raw milk. Raw milk is a movement whose time has come. This book will serve as a catalyst for that movement, providing consumers with the facts and inspiration they need to embrace Nature’s perfect food.

waterproof/shockproof iPhone 5 case {a giveaway}

Abby here, with a confession.

A few months ago we began chatting with Suzanne from AT&T about working together. She’s a super friendly gal, and after a few phone calls and a few email exchanges she mailed us a big box of fun stuff. A handful of things for us to giveaway, an iPad case with a keyboard for me to keep (that I am currently typing on and it has made my blogging life so much easier!) and a iPhone 5 case for us to do whatever we wanted with it.

Regarding the case for the iPhone, she left a note saying we could give it away or keep it for ourselves. Jeanne and I both agreed that we wanted to give it away and didn’t think much more of it.

For the past few weeks this giveaway has been on the schedule (which I say very loosely, because we don’t have a boss and sometimes we ditch the schedule altogether for a beautiful day at the park!). So I wiped the dust off the original box from Suzanne to take a look at the case we’re giving away. One good look at it, and I almost picked up my phone to tell Jeanne we have to call off this giveaway because I need this case.

Screen shot 2013-10-29 at 10.38.35 AM

At first sight, it looks like just another iPhone case, but turns out it’s waterproof and shockproof (which basically means kid-proof).  This Ballistic Hydra case for the iPhone 5 (valued at $40) would enable you to freely take your phone to the beach, the pool or even in the bathtub.  It will also protect against falls up to 8 feet, which would be pretty handy considering how often my phone face-plants in the ground.

Don’t have an iPhone 5? There’s a good chance you know someone who does!  This would be a perfect stocking stuffer or a fun gift to bring to white elephant parties this Christmas!

This giveaway will go for one week, and the winner will be announced here in this post. Prize can be shipped anywhere in the U.S.

a good cause (and a GREAT giveaway)

We’re not the only ones with a great giveaway this week. (CLICK HERE to check out the O’Mamas giveaway).

You see, Kate and her husband are in the process of adopting their second child. But adoption, you may know, is an expensive proposition. And there are a lot of good people in the world, with big hearts and room in their lives and their love to care for littles whose birth mothers can’t care for them. But some of those incredible adoptive parents don’t have deep pockets. And we believe Kate and Kuby fall into that category. Big hearts, less-big pocketbooks.

So as much as we hope you sign up for our giveaway (and really … we hope you sign up for our giveaway), we hope you’ll join Kate and Kuby’s giveaway and fundraiser (which ends tonight) and help in their fundraising effort to pay for the adoptive process.

Friday night seems like a good night to do a good deed, don’t you think?

Jeanne & Abby

Don’t forget to check last week’s giveaway to see if you’re the winner!

Before my kids were old enough to have opinions, I had visions of all educational toys, mostly wooden of course.

And then they grew up.

It’s all about action hero’s in our house, and you can find Bat-Super-Spider-Iron Man paraphanelia in their closets and toy boxes.

untitled (1 of 1)-29

It’s good for me though. It’s good to be reminded they are their own people… with their own likes, dislikes and opinions. I want that for them, as I don’t believe kids are supposed to be little robots.

Superhero’s aside, I strive to keep the toys simple. I’m all about combining education with fun.

That being said, Walking Stick Toy is giving away a Doc HABA kid’s medical kit to one of you! It retails at $42, and would be great to surprise your kids with now or save for Christmas.  Don’t have kids?  I’m sure your family member/neighbor/co-worker would appreciate a fun gift to give to their little one!

Lucky for me, doctors are superheros, too!

We have a few Doc HABA toys at our house (like this, this and this), and the quality is undeniable.  I’ve found if I invest a little money on nicer toys, we all take better care of them.

Walking Stick Toys is a locally owned business (with an online presence) who sells the kind of toys we dream of our kids having. The junk-free, environmentally-friendly toys we wish filled our playrooms.  I’m itching to take the short drive to Missoula to check out their store front!

running in the winter (and a giveaway, too!)

Over the past few months I’ve finally gotten back into running. The five year break was good and all, but it is so much sweeter to be back in the groove.

Coincidently, this summer my four year old learned to ride a bike without training wheels, allowing us to go for longer, faster rides together. It’s been nice to actually exercise while spending time with my kids.

A Montana winter is staring us in the face. Just this week we had two full days of snow and a night in the 20s. And remember I’m from Texas? … Where jogging in below 32 degrees sounds like an Olympic sport.

Screen shot 2013-10-08 at 1.33.45 AM

Joining a gym doesn’t really appeal to me, so I’ve been scrambling to figure out how I’m going to keep running outdoors. A quick jog in the neighborhood is much more practical for me in this stage of life, than a trek to the gym with the kids. (Daycare at the gym just doesn’t do it for my littlest.)

I’ve pieced together a good winter running outfit (wool socks, the right leggings, jacket, etc.), but something seemed to be missing.

I’d gotten out of the habit of listening to music while running, but this seemed like the one thing I was missing. Distraction. I needed something to keep my mind off the fact that my lungs are about to jump out of my throat from the cold.

And plus… how can you not run your heart out while listening to Katy Perry’s Roar. It’s almost impossible.

So here’s where you come in! The kind folks at AT&T sent us a few products to review, as well as a set to give to one of you guys.

We have a brand new Nite Ize Action Armband and a pair of YurBuds earbuds designed specifically for women (sorry folks, iPhone not included).

Back in the day, I ran with my iPod mini clipped to by shorts, but this arm band has proven to be way better. For me the bottom line is that if I have my phone with me, I can run for longer. I don’t have to worry about being needed at home when I know I’m only a phone call away. It’s nice to be available. Also, the armband has a perfect spot to stash your key so you don’t have to worry about stuffing it in your sock.

And the headphones designed specifically for women are quite wonderful, as I’ve never been able to run in the headphones you get with a new phone. They always fell out of my ears. The YurBuds are smaller than the average headphone. They stay in my ear with no problems. And again, if I get a phone call while running, I can seamlessly answer and then get right back to the music.

So I think you’ll like these. And if exercising isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other good opportunties to listen to music. And if listening to music isn’t your thing… well, Christmas is coming and this could be a great gift for someone you love.

This giveaway will be open for one week, ending on Monday, October 14th. The winner will be announced as an update to this post the following day. Prize ships anywhere in the United States.
