I woke up this morning with a headache, a minor sore throat and congestion. A good old fashioned cold always comes at such a surprise.
On these days, it never crosses my mind to run to the drug store and buy Sudafed or Robitussin. I want something more natural that will not only deal with my symptoms, but also my actual cold. I’ve been feeling pretty blah all day, but these are the things that I’m taking to try to ward this off quickly.
I already dedicated an entire post to apple cider vinegar, but I’ll just reiterate that I think it works wonders for the body when you are feeling ill (and also when you are feeling great). The malic acid in this vinegar has anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. I take a tablespoon or 2 every 3 or so hours. You can take it straight or water it down. It can be very tart if you aren’t used to it, but I promise you won’t regret taking it.
Next is peppermint. A few drops of this essential oil under your nose or on your temples as needed will alleviate your headache. Just be careful around your eyes as it could cause a burning sensation. When I was pregnant with my first, I suffered from terrible headaches. A woman at the health food store suggested to my husband that I use this, and I am forever grateful. Her suggestion made my pregnancy so much more enjoyable. I used it often, and that one $7 bottle lasted me over 2 years.
Last… Honey Gardens Propolis Spray. I rely on this stuff anytime I have a sore throat, and it seriously helps so much. I have tried many natural options for fighting off sore throats that have not worked for me, but this one does. This cost about $10 at my local co-op, but you can buy it online for much less. Several members of my extended family have taken this when a sore throat comes on, and every single on of them have said it helped. I have also read that this spray is great for canker sores and acne, but I have yet to personally use it on those.
As always, I’m not claiming to be a doctor over here. There are just a few things that have proven to work for me and my family and I hope you give them a try too.
Also, I know many people out there are doing other natural things that help them when they are under the weather. I’d love to know what they are!
